Co-regulation is a mutual act of creating calm between two people. We will cover what self-regulation is and how to model it for students. We will also discuss focused attention practices (ways to quiet the brain to better focus) and brain intervals (practices to shift, refresh, and relax the brain after intense learning).

Tree Planting Activities with Students
Friday September 18, 2026 9:40am - 10:35am EDT
Participants will learn about the successful planting of trees with student groups at Muncie Central during Civics Day / Week since 2023 and with the Grissom Student Council in 2026.  All of the steps will be described including identifying appropriate locations, requesting utility markings, selecting and obtaining tree seedlings native to East Central Indiana, preparing the appropriate tools and materials, planting the trees appropriately with maximum student involvement, installing protective fencing to keep critters from chewing on the trees, and a maintenance schedule to ensure the tree is appropriately, mulched, watered, weeded, and pruned until established.  All of the actual materials used in the plantings will be physically brought to the session.  Weather permitting, I would like to bring participants out to see a few of the nearby trees that we have planted.

Understanding Grief
Friday September 18, 2026 9:40am - 10:35am EDT

The point of this session is to better understand the impact loss has on children, and to better equip you on becoming more comfortable with the uncomfortable topic of grief. Dealing with the loss of a loved one is something we all will have to deal with, but people are sometimes nervous to start the conversation, or do not feel like they know what to say. We will explore how to have hard conversations, discuss our own attitudes about death, and navigate how to best be there for your students.

What does IQ really mean? Understanding “intelligence” to support universal design for learning
Friday September 18, 2026 9:40am - 10:35am EDT
Working memory? Fluid Reasoning? Processing Speed? What do they really mean and how do they impact learning? This session aims to provide a basic understanding of the components of “intelligence” and how you can use those components to support all learners despite ability level. By exploring how we learn, we can target instruction to students’ intellectual strengths to support their weaknesses for better academic achievement and classroom behavior. This session will provide attendees with concrete tools to support students with average to high IQ and accommodations to support students with low IQ.
