Patterns of Wonder: Finding Joy in Mathematics Through the Alhambra
LIMITED
Friday September 18, 2026 12:45pm - 1:40pm EDT
Limited Capacity seats available
Mathematics is often presented as a collection of procedures, but it can also be a source of beauty, creativity, and wonder. Using the art and architecture of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, as a central example, this session explores how mathematical ideas such as symmetry, transformations, pattern, and structure can help students experience mathematics as a deeply human creative endeavor. Participants will learn about the mathematical richness of the Alhambra and consider practical ways to connect mathematics with art, history, and culture in the classroom. Through hands-on pattern exploration and small-group discussion, participants will reflect on what makes mathematical learning joyful and develop ideas they can adapt for their own students. The session will include opportunities for collaborative conversation, individual reflection, and questions and answers, with an emphasis on approachable strategies that can be used across grade levels and mathematical topics.
